Swine flu update

7th July 2009

Dear Parent/Carer,

We have been informed that one learner at the school has influenza H1N1v (also known as swine flu). This child has a mild illness and is recovering at home.

SCHOOL REMAINS OPEN. Harrow Primary Care Trust has advised us that there would be no benefit in closing the school or offering treatment to staff or learners.

However, if your child becomes unwell with flu-like symptoms, (including high temperature and any two of the following symptoms: cough, runny nose, sore throat, headache, joint/limb pains, diarrhoea or vomiting) please ensure that they stay at home and that you contact your GP as soon as possible for a telephone assessment to determine whether they require treatment for H1N1 flu.

It is very important that your child stays at home if they have flu like symptoms. Your child should not attend school and not mix with others outside the home. Those without symptoms, including children and family members, can undertake their normal activities outside of the home.
General infection control practices and good respiratory hand hygiene can help to reduce transmission of all viruses, including the human swine influenza. This includes:
  • Covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible
  • Disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully
  • Maintaining good basic hygiene, for example washing hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face or to other people
  • Cleaning hard surfaces (e.g. door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product
  • Making sure your children follow this advice
For more information on Swine Flu call the National Information Line on 0800 1 513 513. Alternatively, visit the Health Protection Agency website at www.hpa.org.uk.
Yours sincerely
